Update on Investigations of Black Holes

    • Bob Holloran
    • Friday
    • 6/26, 7/3
    • 10:00 - 11:30
    • $0

This course will provide an update of the investigation of Black Holes. Professor Sean Carroll and his wife will summarize the recently identified paradoxes that are changing the way Black Holes are understood. The first image of a Black Hole is of the Supermassive Black Hole, M87* located at the center of the gargantuan elliptical galaxy Messier 87. It is 53 million light-years (318 quintillion miles) away.

Recent theoretical research has led to new understandings of the nature of Black Hole Event Horizons. Theoretical analysis of Black Holes might lead to unifying Quantum Mechanics and the spacetime of the General Theory of Relativity of Albert Einstein. In the next course Professor Caroll will introduce us to context for understanding Dark Matter and Dark Energy. Links to multiple video and printed online resources are provided for those who want to learn more about Black Holes and the physics associated with them.

    • 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM
    • $2.50

Sweden is a fascinating country and has been one of the great powerhouses throughout the ages, but in the 1800s large areas of the country experienced famine causing major migration to the United States. I will begin this session with my first experience with Swedish culture, and a trip to Minnesota at Christmas with a roommate. I will focus on some of the contributions of these immigrants to the US and then take you on my two excursions into the old country. First, I will go across the narrow bay where Knonborg or Hamlet’s castle. My second extended trip is through Gothenburg and overland. We will visit the home of Alfred Nobel, the bank famous for the Stockholm syndrome, and even may visit an Ikea factory. Sweden today will be discussed.

The Evidence for Dark Matter and Energy

Science does not know what 95% if the matter and energy in the Universe is? Only 5% is made of the atoms and electromagnetic energy we understand. 25% has been labelled Dark Matter, because all we can see is its effect of its gravity. 70% has been labelled Dark Energy because it does not have a particle nature. This course will review the evidence for Dark Matter and Energy primarily using lectures from Professor Sean Carrol in his Dark Matter, Dark Energy: The Dark Side of the Universe published by The Great Courses. Very little new has been learned about what Dark Matter and Energy are since the course was issued in 2007. So, internet sources will address the state of ongoing research.

Savannah may be a little hot in the summer time, but it is still one of the most fascinating cities in the South. It was saved from the wrath of Sherman’s army because a group of city officials told them if they would spare their town, they would not resist. So today, you can see 22 parks, many antebellum mansions, as well as homes of famous people, such as Juliette Low, founder of the Girl Scouts. Eating is a great Savannah tradition. I will tell you about some of the best places to go. After that, you may want to visit the pirate museum or even experience Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

France: In Search of Claude Monet

    • Evelyn Kelly
    • Wednesday
    • 8/12/20
    • 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM
    • $2.50

In 1888, Claude Monet bought a house on two acres and called it Giverny. He became passionate about nature and his style of impressionism evolved to show it. The house and gardens are now a must-see tourist destination for a visit to France. Born in Paris, but rejected by the artists of his time, he searched to find himself in many countries, including serving in the French Foreign Legion. In this presentation, we will look at his life and love of nature. He loved nature so much that he developed a floating art gallery in a boat to be able to paint nature in its own setting-not from a studio in a house.

A woman painter in 1868? No way! Mary, the daughter of a wealthy banker, enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was disgusted with the narrow-mindedness and nastiness of the male students and faculty. Even her own father said he would rather see her dead than become an artist. So she left her native Pennsylvania and moved to Pairs. Her first painting, The Mandolin Player, was shown in a prestigious salon and caught the eye of Edgar Degas. He influenced her into trying the new and exciting style of impressionism. Mary holds a unique place among American artists both as a female painter and impressionist.
