    * Tuesday

    * 08-oct-19 to 12-nov-19

    * 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

    Mindfulness—awareness of present experience with acceptance—is a deceptively simple way of relating to the contents of our minds that has been successfully practiced to alleviate psychological suffering and enhance emotional well-being for over 2,500 years. Cutting-edge scientific research and rapidly accumulating clinical experience are now validating what ancient wisdom traditions have long taught: that mindfulness practice is an effective antidote to our hardwired propensity for psychological distress and is a reliable pathway to increased wisdom, compassion, and fulfillment. This course is based on lectures by Harvard Medical School Professor Ronald D. Siegel from The Great Courses course of the same name.

    What Darwin Didn’t Know: The Modern Science of Evolution 2

    * Gwynn Pealer

    * Tuesday

    * 22-oct-19 to 12-nov-19

    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    * $20.00

    This course is a continuation of one during Summer Term. It is based on a new course from The Great Courses. Here is its description: “Retrace Darwin’s path to his theory of evolution by natural selection, which appeared in his masterpiece The Origin of Species, published in 1859. Encounter collector Alfred Russel Wallace’s astonishing, almost identical, key insight. Detail the types of evidence, not known to Darwin, that have accumulated in the century and a half since his time, deepening and extending his ideas to a remarkable degree.” Genetics is the major understanding that has developed significantly from Darwin’s day, so it is the basis for many of the lectures–how our knowledge has changed and how it impacts many areas that help support our present day understanding of Evolution. Other resources will be used to extend ideas described in the lectures from The Great Courses. Provisions will be made for those students who did not take the first course to learn what they missed.

    IMPERFECT IDEAL Utopian and Dystopian Visions

    * Thursday

    * 31-oct-19 to 12-dec-19

    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    * $30.00

    Throughout the ages, people have looked at their communities and dreamed of how they could be perfected. But such dreams, no matter how well-intentioned, can result in conditions far worse than what came before. The selections in Imperfect Ideal illustrate the best and worst of these utopian and dystopian visions, challenging readers to address the perennial questions of how society should be structured and governed, as well as what kind of communities are the most conducive to human fulfillment, both privately and in the civic arena. In addition to reading the book we will be seeing half-hour tapes entitled: Great Utopian and Dystopian Works of Literature. For the FIRST session please read: The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, by Ursula Le Guin. We will need a minimum of 10 and up to a maximum of 20 for the class to be held. The book Imperfect Ideal may be ordered from The Great Books Foundation (800-222-5870) or as the Kindle Edition from Amazon.

This will be an interesting session culminated with great food and hopefully Bob will. bring some of his famous flourless chocolate cake. This course is drawn from the Great Courses on the above subject by Professor Paul Robbins of the University of Wisconsin. He covers subjects such as human effects on the environment, population growth, agricultural practices, urbanization, climate change and more. Provisions will be made for those who did not take the earlier course to still benefit from this course.

    All About Chocolate with Tastings

    * Bob Holloran

    * Friday

    * 06-dec-19 to 13-dec-19

    * 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

    * $10.00

    All aspects of chocolate will be addressed: what it is; its history; where it comes from; how it is made; why we like it; what part is good for us; and what part can cause problems. In addition to true chocolate bars, we will be tasting some bars with added ingredients, which is now the trend in chocolate. These tastings will expand your horizons and palate, as well as provide the vocabulary for describing the multitude of flavors in chocolate. Various chocolate baked goods, sauces, spreads and drinks will also be tasted and their recipes will be shared. Throughout the course Bob will share his experience in making and marketing organic-certified, raw chocolates spreads. There will be nominal additional fee to cover the costs to conduct the tastings.

    Burned Bras, Boogey Men, Cherry Trees, and Gods: What Is the Truth About Myths?

    * Ron Cooper

    * Wednesday

    * 11-dec-19 to 11-dec-19

    * 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

    The term "myth" is used in a number of ways--sometimes for harmless legends and tall tales, other times for shrewd misinformation or widespread fears. We will look at the roots of some social panics (such as satanic ritual abuse and alien abductions), cultural identity stories (Pilgrims and Founding Fathers), and other recurrent myths and consider whether our brains are hard-wired for irrational beliefs.
