    ### South America Before European Contact
    * Rich Hautanen
    * Thursday
    * 29-mar-18 to 26-apr-18
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    * $25.00

    A broad look at the Inca and their contemporaries in South America in the time period leading up to Columbus voyages. With significant European contact the first peoples of the Western Hemisphere were changed radically, and so was the Old World. What were the peoples of South America doing before European contact? How many were there? How did they live? What technology did they have? What were their spiritual practices? What kind of art did they have? Using mainly The Great Courses and other video documentaries, this course will explore these questions. Archaeological evidence plays the major role here, but later Inca periods also have some literary evidence which was recorded after Spanish contact.

    Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has been used in recent decades to treat certain motion-disorder symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, essential tremor, and some other brain-related conditions. Your instructor, himself a dystonia patient who has had successful DBS surgery, walks around now with wires extending deep into his brain and with brain-pacemaker controllers in his upper chest. He will share understanding as a layman of the why and how of DBS. He will also discuss his own experiences having the hardware installed, having his implanted controllers programmed to optimize their settings, and living with DBS for the past several years. This talk is for anyone interested in the amazing brain and for patients/caregivers contemplating DBS surgery.

    Nashville is more than the Country Music City and the home of Roy Acuff and Johnny Cash; it is also known as the Athens of the South. Much of the architecture is of Greek Revival style, including the famous Parthenon, a close replica to the one in Athens. Starting from the Gaylord Opry Land Hotel, we will visit many historic sites including the Hermitage, home of Andrew Jackson and the Franklin Civil War Battlefield. This is one of the hottest US tourist destinations, which you may want to visit during the fall.

    We all enjoy the long list of built-in apps provided by Apple, but many of us rarely venture away from reading mail, surfing the web, working with photos, and maintaining a calendar. We want to encourage you to go beyond the basics and learn to get more out of your Mac.

    The Productivity Tools Workshops will be a series of hands-on sessions where we can study together and learn about a number of the productivity tools available for the Mac. These are hands.-on sessions and attendees are expected to contribute by learning about the tools, sharing experiences and tips, and helping others get more from their computers. There will be a total of four workshops during the summer with two topics per session, each presented by a different attendee. Topics will be posted on machelp.tech in advance so be thinking about what software or productivity tool you would like to tackle.

    * Wednesday

    * 30-may-18 to 30-may-18

    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    * $5.00

    We travel not to escape life, but so that life will not escape us. Why would one want to visit all seven continents? A mother and daughter team (my daughter Natalie and I) will take you to each one of these continents and share with you how our lives have become so much more meaningful because we have done so. Each continent has presented a particular value. For example, South America has enabled untold adventure into the mountains of the Andes and mysteries of the Amazon, and Europe offers culture and history relating to our heritage. Although we have been in 84 other countries, we will not forget North America and the USA- this land is your land and my land. Some of the hottest places for visiting are within hours.

    ### Law School for Seniors: Litigation and Legal Practice

    * Wednesday

    * 30-may-18 to 06-jun-18

    * 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

    * $10.00

    This is the first in a series of Law School for Seniors courses, It offers a valuable orientation to the study of law and the subsequent courses in the series. You will explore how our legal system is the direct result of democratic values, how the system works, and why we teach law the way we do. You will be prompted to rethink – and perhaps change – previously held conceptions about how lawyers work, and about the issues they struggle with each and every time they step in the courtroom. Some lectures from The Great Courses: Law School for Everyone will supplement presentations by Dr. Schrier.
