    This class will conclude the study of America's only truly popular war. Enrollment in the first two courses is not a requirement for this class. The course will begin with our early relations with Japan, which began in the 19th century thru the Japanese military expansion that led to the attack on Pearl Harbor. We will then follow the American response to this attack as our military almost immediately goes on the offense and will conclude with the use of atomic weapons, which ended the war. Specific topics to be discussed will include Gen. MacArthur's leadership in the war, US Marine tactics and the Japanese land war in Asia that will ultimately bring about the VietNam War and present-day situation with North Korea and "little rocket man". Also to be discussed will be moral issues such as the use of the atomic bomb and Japanese racism toward not only white Americans, but also other Asian people they conquered. Other topics will include the myth that the Japanese surrendered unconditionally and the transformation of the Japanese military dictatorship into that of a democratic nation under MacArthur in post-war Japan. Due to the nature of this subject graphic details and language will be used.

    How did life begin? How is it changing? How are human beings related to other forms of life? This collection of readings will introduce you to some of the questions that scientists have posed about the nature of life, and to provisional answers. While the questions they pose and the answers they give often vary greatly, each selection included here exemplifies the disciplined curiosity that informs the scientific process. The authors included are: Aristotle, Lucretius, Bacon, Darwin (4 readings), Mendel, Claude Bernard, Colinvaux (his essay is, Why Big Fierce Animals are Rare), Eiseley, Rachel Carson, Lorenz, Watson, Dawkins, Gould, E.O.Wilson, Lynn Margulis. You will read the selection at home and we will discuss each in class. In addition we will be listening to half-hour tapes on The Darwinian Revolution with Professor Frederick Gregory of the University of Florida. Class will be limited to 25 members. Only students who took the Fall Term course may register, unless the permission of the instructor has been obtained.

    ### The Norman Conquest of 1066 as Revealed by Archaeology

    * 26-jan-18 to 02-feb-18
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    * $10.00

    This course focuses on England during the period from Edward the Confessor to the eventual Norman Conquest in 1066. Unfortunately, there is very little contemporary documentation of the conquest. So, even details, like where the final battle actually occurred, have been changed by recent archaeological evidence. This course is the tenth and last of a series of courses about how archaeology and genetics provide our best understanding of Ancient Britain Before the Middle Ages when there is little written history.

While talking to the operator he heard gunshots and then saw an unknown white male suspect dragging a struggling female down the driveway to a white Jeep and drive away. You will hear the 911 call, experience the intricacies of the subsequent investigation and legal processing of the Defendant through the Criminal Justice System. You will learn how MGM Disney assisted in the investigation, a bit about forensic DNA, blood spatter analysis, and our local bear population, and how one bear became a "possible suspect" in the cause of death of one of our victims.

    Because I had to use an airline ticket to a US destination or lose it, I decided to investigate places to go that would fit into my summer schedule. I have traveled in 84 foreign countries and had hoped to add a few more, but reluctantly we settled on a trip to the Southwest. What a wonderful adventure. Not only did we see the Grand Canyon, but several other surprises awaited us. Come with me as we look at the marvelous Southwest. You may have been there also, but let me surprise you with a few other things beyond its parks.

    * Monday
    * 5-mar-18 to 26-mar-18
    * 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
    * $15.00

    It is important to become proficient at basic drawing techniques, the rudimentary skills that will be applied time and time again. This course was developed to guide seasoned participants and beginners, as a fast-paced illustration drawing course that works to expand the fundamentals learned in The Craft of Drawing beyond the Basics, by adding methods for mixed media even-shading blending, to soften the transitions between light, mid and dark tonal values, and the line and shading techniques of your choice to achieve the results you want when creating your finished works of art. Participants will explore different mediums, and methods of transferring (grid, tracing transfer, projection) their outline sketches to the final drawing surface and good erasing techniques. Bring your personality, style, and goals to what you will learn while exploring Mastering the Craft of Drawing exercises. Participants should have a working knowledge of basic and complex shapes, one-point perspective, controlling basic line strokes, contour-lines, shading, creating tonal values and texture with line, composition and layout, and shading will enhance the fundamental drawing foundation while expanding upon the basics.

    * Thursday
    * 29-mar-18 to 26-apr-18
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    * $25.00

    A broad look at the Inca and their contemporaries in South America in the time period leading up to Columbus voyages. With significant European contact the first peoples of the Western Hemisphere were changed radically, and so was the Old World. What were the peoples of South America doing before European contact? How many were there? How did they live? What technology did they have? What were their spiritual practices? What kind of art did they have? Using mainly The Great Courses and other video documentaries, this course will explore these questions. Archaeological evidence plays the major role here, but later Inca periods also have some literary evidence which was recorded after Spanish contact.
