    Effective Letters to the Editor do not just materialize out of thin air. The topic must be clearly identified, ditto the reason for writing. Effective letters provide good editorial topics and strong news leads. Grammatically correct letters will be printed first, especially if Who, What, Why, When, Where and How are clearly presented. Remember supporting details and that finger-pointing and prejudicial information will be ignored. Learn the tricks of the trade. With luck we will have a retired newspaper writer and current editorial page editor as guests.

    In your life you want things done fairly. If one person is treated one way and another arbitrarily, we would scream about justice. That is why procedure and following rules in law make it fair and efficient. These four sessions will consider your procedural rights and why they matter and how they are applied in court and interesting cases. We will investigate the topics of jurisdiction, pleadings, discovery, and decisions about the case. These topics are the foundation for understanding civil procedures in court. This course is based in part on lectures from The Great Courses: Law School for Everyone.

    We all know Ben Franklin discovered lightning is electricity. But, his contributions to many branches of science were so extensive that he was probably the most famous scientist of his time. Of course, his inventions were also important for many of seniors even today with our bifocals and their modern enhancements. But, he was also an innovator, introducing to our country many institutions that were more common in Europe, including a university, postal system, library, fire department and fire insurance. The course will be in part based on lectures by Professor Robert Allison in The Great Courses: The Age of Benjamin Franklin.

    College athletic programs on the whole used to be clean - USED TO BE!!! Professional athletes used to be role models. The most amateur of amateur sports programs, high school athletics and summer leagues for youths and teenagers, now have mommies and daddies wanting a say in everything. What happened here? College athletics are big business - The revenue at the Penn State football program is so excessive it pays for the remainder of the athletic programs at the school. Professional athletes are out of control and amateur programs run on the win at all costs philosophy. We will discuss in detail various problems exposed in athletics at all levels, evaluate solutions and possible changes, and discuss the underlying causes behind the problems, and what needs to be eliminated so the problems do not continue to occur.

    ### A Visit with Jane Austen 1 -Emma
    * Jim Coleman
    * Monday
    * 10-sep-18 to 17-sep-18
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    * $10.00

    This is the first course in a series of three Fall Term courses during which we will read the first three of the six great novels by Jane Austen. In addition to reading the novel, we will be reading one chapter devoted to each novel in A JANE AUSTEN EDUCATION by William Deresiewicz. The subtitle to his boook is How Six Novels Taught Me About Love, Friendship and the Things That Really Matter. A word about the Austen books: Many would consider them for women only – HOW WRONG! MEN WOULD LEARN MUCH FROM JANE AUSTEN, PARTICULARLY ABOUT THEMSELVES - REMEMBER JIMMY STUART IN THE PHILADELPHIA STORY WHO REFUSED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF KATHERINE HEPBURN BECAUSE SHE WAS DRUNK! NOW THERE IS A GENTLEMAN! NOW THERE IS JANE AUSTEN! The week after our discussion on the book we will watch a movie and have a final discussion. Photography is all about light. If there was no light, you would not have a photograph. The word photography derives from Greek, and literally means light drawing. How we control the available light is the basis for all photography. Light in photography sets the mood, creates depth, or highlights a subject; the light around you and how you respond to it can often make or break a photo. All of us are aware that the world around us appears differently depending on the day, the weather, and time of day or year, or if the light you are shooting with is natural or artificial. So, just as the light determines how we see things, it also dictates how our photo will look. In this course you will learn the characteristics of light and photography and how you can use this to your advantage to bring your photos to life. Also, to have a thorough understanding of your cameras, how white balance settings to improve your photography. Skill Level: Beginner

    The vast areas in Africa challenge our understanding of violent conflicts there. This three-week series attempts to illuminate the background of conflicts in two of those areas. The first presentation surveys the roots and dynamics of war in Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has taken 5.5 million lives since 1996, more than Syria, Iraq or Vietnam, and involved nine countries. The second and third presentations examine the rising influence of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and Boko Haram in West Africa’s Sahel, and the American stake in the region.

    ### Keeping Things Whole: Readings in Environmental Science
    * Jim Coleman
    * Thursday
    * 4-oct-18 to 13-dec-18
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    * $50.00

    Wholeness is the key theme of the anthology on environment. We are one with the natural world, not just with the millions of other living species with whom we share it. But, we are also with the elements of air, water and earth of which we are composed. Sometimes we need to stand back and view our world in perspective - from the beginnings of the universe to the littleness of our affairs. Olaf Stapledon once wrote: ...and on the skin of this little grain all the swarms of men and women have lived in labor and blindness with intermittent joy and intermittent lucidity of spirit. It is that lucidity of spirit that this book celebrates. We will be reading some twenty writings (10 in the FALL; ten in the SPRING) beginning with Katahdin by Thoreau and ending with Dimensions of Deformity by Gordon Miller. In addition we will be seeing a DVD on the Environment. The book Keeping Things Whole may be purchased from the Great Books Foundation (1-800-222-5870). Also, you should purchase Pilgrim at Thinker Creek (explanation to follow in class). There will be a charge for printing.
