    ### Keeping Things Whole: Readings in Environmental Science
    * Jim Coleman
    * Thursday
    * 4-oct-18 to 13-dec-18
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    * $50.00

    Wholeness is the key theme of the anthology on environment. We are one with the natural world, not just with the millions of other living species with whom we share it. But, we are also with the elements of air, water and earth of which we are composed. Sometimes we need to stand back and view our world in perspective - from the beginnings of the universe to the littleness of our affairs. Olaf Stapledon once wrote: ...and on the skin of this little grain all the swarms of men and women have lived in labor and blindness with intermittent joy and intermittent lucidity of spirit. It is that lucidity of spirit that this book celebrates. We will be reading some twenty writings (10 in the FALL; ten in the SPRING) beginning with Katahdin by Thoreau and ending with Dimensions of Deformity by Gordon Miller. In addition we will be seeing a DVD on the Environment. The book Keeping Things Whole may be purchased from the Great Books Foundation (1-800-222-5870). Also, you should purchase Pilgrim at Thinker Creek (explanation to follow in class). There will be a charge for printing.

In this course we will examine our scientific understanding about what we know and do not know about a number of topics that may become mainstream in a few years. These include: teleportation, time travel, parallel universes, extra-sensory perception, artificial intelligence/singularity, and bionic men, women and pets.

    * Friday
    * 16-nov-18 to 14-dec-18
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    Historical linguists and archelogists have traced the beginnings of English, and many other modern languages, to a group of nomads who lived north of the Black Sea about 2500 BCE. They tamed horses and invented the wheel, which allowed their descendants to migrate from original territory in every direction. With time their languages evolved in these regions into new languages, of which one became Old English We will follow this trail to the English of Shakespeare with the help of lectures by several professors from The Great Courses.

    Card Games (samba, canasta, pinochle, euchre-), Board games (Ticket to Ride, Clue, Parcheesi), Domino games (Mexican Train and Chicken Foot) and favorites like Sequence and Rummikub have benefits beyond their intrinsic value of fun and play. Playing games is not a waste of time or only for children. Older adults can benefit from the social, emotional, and cognitive value of engaging in game playing regularly. Socializing can be a powerful way to inject more fun into your life. In the words of George Bernard Shaw, “We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” Expect to participate in playing games at each session.

    In the late 1940s and early 1950s, 930 individual documents emerged from the caves of Qumran, located on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea. The course tells the remarkable story of the scrolls. A settlement near the caves where the scrolls were found has been excavated extensively, indicating that its occupants were the source of the scrolls. From this work we get a good understanding of the lifestyle of this group. Lectures from The Great Courses by an archeologist and by a scholar of the Dead Sea Scrolls will introduce the site, the scrolls and their historical and religious context and importance

    If you think age or lack of experience means learning a new language is impossible, this is the class for you! Senior Learners Inc., presents courses that require no prior knowledge, so they are perfect for beginners. There is no memorization required, and there are no exams or grades to cause you stress, just a welcoming environment and a wonderful opportunity to learn something new and exciting. Senior Spanish employs a whole language learning approach designed to be fun and relaxing. In each lesson we will learn a series of short phrases by practicing them together until we feel comfortable with them and we know what they all mean. Then we will use them to have mini-conversations and to play games. We will also watch short videos from well-known television shows and movies to hunt for the phrases we learned and present cultural topics for discussion. We will also discuss topics such as how learning a little Spanish can improve brain health, improve general communication skills, improve understanding of yourself and others, and more.

    A SYNOPSIS OF SLAVERY: USA, FL, Marion County - Slavery is not unique to the USA. But, it developed a peculiar and pernicious form here. The Preamble to the Constitution in envisioning “a more perfect union” had 4 objectives. The second is: to insure domestic tranquility. Slavery here undermined this hope. To understand the lack of domestic tranquility today, it is helpful to examine how the effects of slavery continues to be cancerous in our body politic.

    The Civil War remains the singular most devastating event in the history of our Republic. More persons were killed in this one war than in all military events from the Revolutionary War to current military engagements cumulatively. The unprecedented loss of lives and destruction to property was not from without as within. How to put Humpty Dumpty back together again? The formidable challenge during the period of Reconstruction brought out the best and worst in Americans. The U.S. government imposed a de-Nazification program on Germany after WWII enabling it to achieve incredible healing in a relatively short time. Imagine if there had been a de-Confederization program after the Civil War how much closer we would be to “a more perfect Union?” The best efforts of Reconstruction, amid an incredibly challenging scenario, sought heroically to heal the wound of slavery and a civil war. Reconstruction remains a work in progress.

    Joseph Campbell discovered a profound archetypal myth, the Monomyth, underlying the various legends of the world. Dressed in a thousand different masks and costumes and given a thousand different tasks to perform, the various heroes of the world’s myths all undergo similar metaphoric journeys or quests. Although no hero experiences the journey in exactly the same way, he found that the basic pattern or paradigm of the hero’s journey existed in all cultures. Note: legends and myths (stories) does not mean we are not referring to REAL PEOPLE.
