In this course we will look at the period of Indian history when various European powers eventually began competing for trade and established areas of control in India. Special emphasis will be given to the Mughal Empire which was a powerful empire that controlled most of the subcontinent at its height in the late 1600s. We will end with the rise of the British East India Company which gained control of large parts of the subcontinent, at its apex was the largest company in the world and had a private army twice the size of the British Army. The course will make use of various videos from The Great Courses and other online sources, and allow plenty of time for discussion.
