The 1940s and 50s were the Golden Age of steam locomotives when they carried both freight and passengers across the country. The largest locomotives of this era were articulated allowing their front wheels to move independently from the drive wheels and firebox. This design allowed longer engines to traverse tight curve. The Union Pacific Big Boy was the largest these locomotives. Restored Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 is now a star on YouTube as it traverses the entire country for the 250th Anniversary Celebration. This course will explore: 1) why they were built, 2) why they were replaced by diesel locomotives, 3) how No. 4014 was restored, 4) its operation and 5) the limitations imposed on its current operations by loss of infrastructure and safety regulations. There will be time to reminisce about the trains of our youth.
