This fascinating period covers the era where the idea of England moves away from its French‐Norman roots and toward a distinct identity, punctuated by some of the most dramatic power struggles in history. Topics include Richard the Lionhearted, King John and the Magna Carta, Daily Life in the 13th Century, Hundred Years War, role of chivalry and the Peasants Revolt. Throughout this period, English kings, notoriously short of money, struggled for power with the barons, the best source of money. These struggles led to the formation of Parliament, which becomes increasingly important. This course uses clips from the Great Courses: The Story of Medieval England by Dr. Jennifer Paxton.
