This course covers Gorbachev's rise to power, his summits with President Ronald Reagan, Perestroika, Glasnost, the August 1991 Coup, the final dissolution of the Soviet Union. Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius will be our guide through these topics with excerpts from his lecture on Gorbachev in his course Communism in Decline, From Sputnik to Gorbachev. Much of this course will be based on his interviews and documentaries about him. They are supplemented with text from his extensive corpus of writing during and after his tenure the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and finally as the only President of the Soviet Union.
