The Founding Fathers arrived in Philadelphia in May 1787 to try to remedy the defects of the weak Articles of Confederation. This course examines that long hot summer as they proposed, debated, and designed a new form of government. They faced many issues that especially divided the large and small states. For example, representation in Congress, continuing slavery, regulating commerce, and separating powers among the branches of government. It became quite hot at times! They sweated and argued. By September, they had agreed upon a set of compromises that allowed a new constitution to be proposed to the people of the United States. This course includes lectures by Professor Allen Guelzo from his course America’s Founding Fathers from The Great Courses.
