After railways were invented in the early 1800s, they changed the world radically. They made it possible to move large numbers of people and volumes of goods overland at high speed and low cost. They linked the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and made the U.S. a powerful nation. They were essential to the North’s victory in the Civil War and changed foreign policy around the world. In the fall, we begin our examination of how these transformations occurred and we will learn about key people who made it possible. This course uses The Great Courses, How Railroads Transformed the World, with Prof. Patrick N. Alli.
