New York City was settled by the Dutch in 1624, who established a trading post called New Amsterdam. The British seized control in 1664, renaming it New York. In the 18th century, New York City became an important port and commercial center. The 19th century saw rapid growth due to immigration, particularly from Europe. The early 1900s were marked by further growth and modernization. Skyscrapers began to define the skyline, with landmarks like the Empire State Building (1931) symbolizing the architectural innovation of the city. In recent years, NYC has continued to evolve with new architectural projects, sustainability initiatives, and cultural developments. The construction of modern skyscrapers like the Hudson Yards complex and the revitalization of areas like the High Line are examples of this ongoing transformation.
