A follow-up to ~Tales from the Viennese Woods, Part I~ this four-week course will explore the lives and music of three representatives of the ~Second Viennese School~: Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg, as well as the art of Vienna. Though active in the same geographic region as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven—the so-called ~First Viennese School~--the later Viennese composers produced music that was vastly different in style. What happened to cause this change, and what exactly is different? The course will include a lecture component, presented by Dr. Sarah Satterfield, as well as a screening of portions of ~The Great Courses~ DVDs devoted to these composers.
