History is made not only by kings and queens, but equally by inventors and the technological powers they unleash. This course looks at the period broadly from 1700 to 1900 emphasizing how the world was transformed by new forms of transportation, new energy sources, new materials, and new societal organizations. Starting with a challenge confronting society, we explore how an invention was developed, the science on which it was based, and how well it solved the challenge. Along the way, we will learn about some very creative and fascinating people. This course utilizes the Great Courses ~Understanding the Inventions That Changed the World”~.
