Stars are the most important components of our universe. Without them, there would be no significant structure in the universe- no galaxies, no solar systems, no planets, no life. The Universe would be a vast sea of diffuse gas. In this course, we will examine the life histories of stars. All stars are born from dense clouds of gas and dust, then spend millions to billions of years producing energy from the fusion of lighter to heavier elements, and finally, they die, sometimes in spectacular explosions. Our course material will be based on The Great Courses lecture series by Dr. Keivan Stassun, The Life and Death of Stars, and Dr. Alex Filippenko, Understanding the Universe, along with other source material. The Fall Term will comprise the first half of the course, and the second half will be presented in the Spring Term.
