Plan and develop the fundamental skills and techniques to create realistic object(s) representation(s) in a charcoal drawing. I intend this fast-paced intro drawing session as an overview to the subject. The step-by-step demonstrations will guide your activities as you work through the weekly projects, and as a means of ordering the process for self-study. The weekly session guide you through gesture drawing (quick sketching), contour and cross-contour line, and massing methods and techniques, to use and expand your acquired skills. The aim is to provide information about the materials, tools, techniques and equipment, to establish a foundation from which you learn the basics through tutorials, self-study projects and experiments, to develop your style. Prerequisite: Not required: Participants should have a working knowledge of basic geometric shapes, and the basic lines such as horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved, wavy, thin, thick.
Materials: 18 x 24 Rough texture newsprint paper for quick gesture drawing, 8.5 x 11 copy paper for practice, 9 x 12 pad charcoal paper, vine charcoal sticks, 6B wood encased charcoal pencils, kneaded eraser, fixative spray. Optional materials: ruler, small paint brush/ paper stomp (for blending), chamois (or soft cloth), alternate paper products, ie., pastel paper, hot press water color paper, toned paper, any surface with a bit of tooth/roughness….
