Spain, or what we now know as the country of Spain, is a rich canvas composed of a myriad of peoples, cultures, and historical events superimposed upon a beautiful, lush, yet oft times austere geographical landscape. In order to understand it and its place in world history, the four classes in this course will reach back to its origins and explore its development up until the year A.D. 711, the time of the Islamic invasion and occupation of the Iberian Penninsula. This course will meet once a week for two hours during which the Great Courses lectures on Spain will be interspersed with other interesting information, such as cultural and historical anecdotes, visuals of famous monuments, as well as examples of music and art.
