The raid on March 10, 1865 was the only time the Civil War came to Marion County. Misrepresented and inaccurately portrayed, this risky raid came only weeks before the wars end. Learn about the ~experiment~ in having Black soldiers in the Army and their difficult journey. Then, follow the raider team of mostly Black men who planned, led, and executed their own mission. It involved traveling 100 miles behind enemy lines for the raid in Marion County, then walking 80 miles to safety in St. Augustine while knowing that a crack Confederate cavalry unit would be in hot pursuit. A gripping journey awaits! Our instructor is the author of the book ~To Succeed Where Others Failed: The Untold Story of the Marshall Plantation Raid~, on which the course is based.
