Energy choices abound in our daily lives. Should I trade in my car for a newer one, possibly hybrid or electric? Should I replace an old appliance with a more efficient one? Should I make my home more energy efficient using better windows or adding attic insulation? As citizens, we face choices about political candidates and ballot measures that can have enormous energy consequences. Many factors must be considered before choices can be made. How much can we rely on the information provided by sales persons or the claims of politicians? Do we not need to think for ourselves? Join Dr. Matt Reilly in exploring some of the things we need to know in making wise energy choices. Dr Reilly, a retired professor of chemical engineering and integrated science, was also the executive director of the National Academy of Engineering’s board on integrated utility systems. As a senior executive with the US Department of Energy, he chaired the inter‐agency task force that assessed the environmental impacts of U.S. fossil energy research programs. This course will encourage class discussion of several videos from “The Science of Energy” produced by The Great Courses.
