Relations between the United States and China are arguably the most important bilateral relationship in world affairs in the 21st century. China’s global economic importance and rising political and military power have come about during the time that the United States became the world’s sole superpower. Whether the two powers will support international peace and development and pursue more cooperative ties, or will become antagonistic as their interests compete, or will pursue some other path in world affairs is the subject of ongoing debate among specialists and policy makers in both countries. This presentation will look at the relationship between these two countries as it was, how it is now, and what it may become in the future.
