In the early months of the war in Afghanistan, there was an uprising by Taliban and al Qaeda detainees that escalated into one of the bloodiest engagements of the war. CIA and military leaders wanted a safe, secure place to interrogate high value detainees for intelligence. It was decided that these detainees would be taken from Afghanistan and held at the US military facility at Guantanamo Bay (GTMO), Cuba. The resultant mission to transport detainees from Afghanistan to GTMO was born. This presentation will reveal how the operation came about and how it was carried out.
