Nuclear weapons require special systems and procedures to ensure their protection, safe storage, security, handling and deployment. During the Manhattan Project tight control was maintained over the entire process by General Groves, who reported only to General Marshall, The Secretary of War and the President. The first two were deployed by a dedicated Composite Group that had specially modified B-29s and training. It was led by a carefully selected commanding officer. During the Cold War many types were deployed and the number of nuclear weapons increased exponentially. Many types of military units, facilities, aircraft, missiles and ships were used to deploy them, which required large numbers of highly trained and motivated personnel. Their strategic defensive role meant they had to be ready for use at all times in the event of a sneak attack. This course will briefly explore each of these aspects of our Cold War Deterrent.
