We will use tools of Intellectual History to delve into several widely read and discussed controversial works of the 17th and 18th centuries, in part to restage a bit of the drama they presented to audiences of the time, questions such as, what does it mean to be civilized, to make progress as a society, and what role can education play? Be prepared to think, question, participate in discussion in a variety of formats, and explore modern connections. We will consider excerpts from some of the key works that include: Discourse on Method by Descartes; Robinson Crusoe by Defoe; Persian Letters by Montesquieu; Candide by Voltaire, Discourse on Inequality by Rousseau; Vindication of the Rights of Women by Mary Wollstonecraft; Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin; and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
