This course is a continuation of a series of 3 courses. It is an unfortunate fact that crime is commonplace in life and in history, and that includes the arguably most heinous of crimes: murder. Yet it is also true that despite its horror, or perhaps because of it, such crimes often excite an odd fascination. The crimes examined in this series are selective examples. The crimes are also roughly divided between those in which main question is the identity of the killer or killers, and those in which the nagging issue is their motivation. Even in the most famous cases, the series takes a fresh look, starting with the basic facts of the case, often startlingly sparse. Then it digs into the evidence and the theories and rampant speculation each case spawned. It reconsiders accepted explanations and open, or reopen, alternate possibilities to the questions presented by each of the cases. After all, it is the questions, not the answers, that spark our interest and keep us up at night.
