This course is the fifth course in a planned series of six courses. The defeat of Germany in May 1945 was the culmination of the Allies steady advances on both the Western and European fronts. In parallel the industrial might of the United States enabled vast armadas of ships, planes and supplies that were reconquering the Philippines and taking Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Any examination of World War II requires of study of the critical battles and scholarly analysis of the strategic options and objectives behind the battles and their overall significance. We will also learn about the scientific, technical and industrial advances accelerated by the War, which eventually provided the wherewithal for the final victory. The course draws upon lectures from several of the Great Courses, along with publicly available videos from the time and subsequent analyses.
