The thrust of this class is a close reading of Hemingway's short stories with the emphasis on The Iceberg Effect or The Theory of Omission. Intriguing yet speculative, how do these stories illuminate the myth, the man and the encroaching darkness of his later years. Stages in his life reflected in the stories (In most cases the totality of the assignment for each class involves little reading-10-15 pages) will be the organizing principle beginning with his youth at Indian Camp and culminating with the novella, The Old man and the Sea at the end of the second course Fall Term. Viewing Ken Burns' recent PBS documentary would be helpful in understanding Hemingway and his works. Note: PDF copies of the short stories to be read prior to each class will be available for download by registered students.
