In October 2017, the combat deaths of four US soldiers in Niger, a country in the western Sahel, shocked the American public. Their deaths were the product of an upsurge of terrorism in Niger and other Sehalian countries—Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Mali. What caused this increase? What are the prospects for squashing terrorist organizations, like Boko Haram, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the Islamic State, and similar entities in the Sahel?
