The details of the various String Theories will not be meaningful to anyone without a PhD in theoretical physics or the mathematics of Calami-You Manifolds. We will focus on those aspects that do not require these advanced degrees: (1) its history, including when, who and why its initial use as a potential solution to understanding the nuclei of atoms was abandoned; (2) its later application as a means of unifying the quantum realm and gravity, which failed; (3) the theoretical breakthrough by a couple of physicists who persevered; and (4) the vast army of physicists who are still working on it without any experimental validation. Resources will be provided for those who want a more detailed understanding of the concepts that underly it.
