This course will summarize the life of Stephen Hawking that was severely impacted by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease). His co-author and fellow theoretical physicist, Leonard Mlodinow, provided a detailed description of how Hawking survived ALS so long and thrived as a physicist in the book: Stephen Hawking A Memoir of Friendship and Physics. We will also explore ground breaking work Hawking did in cosmology and black holes. Information about his contributions to physics will be drawn from several of his best selling books, starting with his first, A Brief History of Time and the two books that Mlodinow co-authored.
