Ancient Egyptian civilization is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating chapters in human history. While remnants of the culture like temples, obelisks, and sarcophagi continue to mystify us, their true meaning was only unlocked after the hieroglyphs were deciphered. So this course focuses: 1) on how Egyptian hieroglyphs were deciphered; 2) how they function as a writing system; and the historical context in which they were developed and used. It is based in part on lectures about Ancient Egypt and its writing system from various courses by The Great Courses. Additional resources will be drawn from the internet and books about Ancient Egypt Bob has acquired over the years.
