Now, certain parts of Africa offer attractive alternatives for these and other Islamic extremists. Groups such as al Shabaab in Somalia, Boko Haram in northeast Nigeria and Lake Chad, and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and their affiliates, capitalize on local grievances. Where are these areas, what are those grievances, and what makes these areas of sub-Saharan Africa so vulnerable to Islamic extremists?
