* Ross Olmos
* 13-jun-18 to 25-jul-18
* 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM
This course, the second in the series, provides a general overview of the Criminal Justice System focusing primarily on crime and the courts. We will review how criminal law is created and enforced. We will look at the various elements that define criminal acts, including criminal intent, as well as legal defenses to criminal acts, including self-defense, intoxication, insanity, and necessity. We will learn what the basic rights are for people suspected or accused of crimes and what protections are afforded to protect people against unlawful police action. Important issues such as: plea-bargaining; right to trial by jury; right to legal counsel; search and seizure; stop and frisk, and cruel and unusual punishment will be explored. Some lectures from The Great Courses: Law School for Everyone will supplement presentations by Dr. Olmos.
