Admiral Rickover served in the US Navy for 63 years (from June 1918 as a Midshipman at the Naval Academy until his forced retirement in February 1982). Starting in 1946 when he was at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to learn about nuclear power, the rest of his career was as the head of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program with dual assignments in the Navy and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and its successor agencies. Nuclear powered submarines, starting with USS NAUTILUS and nuclear powered surface ships, starting with the cruiser USS LONG BEACH and the aircraft carrier USS ENTERPRISE, were the direct result of his technical and political efforts. The nuclear power industry in the West started with the Shippingport Atomic Power Station, which was also designed, built and operated under his direction. Primary sources for this course are three books authorized by Admiral Rickover (two histories of the Naval Reactors Program and a biography) and a book written by one of his early deputies at Naval Reactors. Bob Holloran was on the technical staff of Admiral Rickover for eight years and reported directly to the Admiral the last three years as the Naval Reactors Representative at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. In the follow on course, Bob shares his experiences and favorite Rickover anecdotes.
