From 1347-1353, a virulent, highly contagious disease—plague—killed about 40% of Europe’s population. Where did this disease originate? How did it spread so quickly? What were its social, political, and economic consequences? Most important, what can we learn from this 14th century nightmare as we confront new maladies like antibiotic-resistant diseases, SARS and Ebola?
