### The Plantagenets 1154-1485 * Russ Harding * Wednesday * 10-may-17 to 21-jun-17 * 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM * $5.00 The Plantagenet dynasty ruled England longer than any other royal family in English history and at its peak controlled an empire from Scotland to Jerusalem, including most of France. In this informative class we will revisit Eleanor of Aquitaine, twice queen and the most famous woman in medieval history, her husband, the aggressively virile and hot-tempered Henry II, and their two sons who became kings: Richard the Lionhearted and King John, a tyrant who was forced to sign the Magna Carta, which James Madison used as the basis of our own Bill of Rights. The Magna Carta, which was in reality a peace treaty between John and the English nobility, will also be well covered, since it has had a profound effect on our own government. This was the age of the King Arthur legend, chivalry, and of courtly love, of Robin Hood and the Knights Templar, the Black Death, the founding of Parliament, the Black Prince (who first used the term Black Princes' lives matter) and of Thomas Becket. These subjects and others will be discussed in class and as usual student input is encouraged.
