Want to learn about one of the world’s least understood regions? These selections from the history of sub-Saharan Africa aim to do just that. We begin with a survey of the impact of geography on the politics, societies, and economics of the region. We then turn to the supply side of the Atlantic slave trade to see what factors made slavery and the slave trade possible—and profitable—within Africa itself. The coming of Islam to West Africa is the topic of the third class, where we will explore what made Islam so attractive, and the impact of Africa on Islam. The European colonial impact on sub-Saharan Africa is the topic of the fourth class. Here we cover how Europe managed (or did not!) this vast undertaking, along with the African responses. The final class provides a look at San-speaking hunter-gathers (Bushmen) of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. They represent the oldest existing genetic and linguistic links to the human family. This class covers aspects of San history, economy and religion and includes anecdotes of personal experiences.
