A Big History view of a civilization starts with the geography of the land it inhabits and then the earliest human habitation. Archeological findings that reveal the arrival of early humans, homo sapiens, and the millennia of pre-literate history are summarized. Finally, the earliest agrarian civilizations, tribute taking states and literacy are introduced. By the end of this course the foundations for all subsequent Japanese dynasties will be in place. This course is includes lectures from The Great Courses: Foundations of Eastern Civilization. It is taught by Professor Craig Benjamin, a colleague of Professor David Christian, the founder of the Big History movement. The Japanese writing system is also described in a lecture from another of The Great Courses.
