Without a doubt Eleanor was the most important and powerful queen of the Middle Ages and certainly one of the most infamous women in history. She was renowned for her beauty and hunger for power as well as being headstrong and unconventional. She was the wife of two kings and the mother of three English kings including Richard the Lionheart. Eleanor fought for the freedom to make her own choices in life and defied custom and religious teaching which resulted in a black legend that has stalked her ever since the Second Crusade of which she was an active participant. Her life represents the problems faced by ambitious and able women living in Medieval society and in an age when women were defined by their powerlessness, Eleanor choose to live her life as she saw fit and paid a heavy price in her endless pursuit of power.
